The Community Welfare Department consists of two major divisions: (a) Social Services (Health and Education) (b) Community Relations & Mobilization/Advocacy.
(A.) SOCIAL SERVICES
Education
The Education support division of the Welfare Department is saddled with the responsibilities of coordinating all education support programmes designed to complement the State Government efforts to uplift the standard of education in the Oil Producing Areas of the State. The department;
HEALTH
The Commission in its attempt to immensely contribute its quota to the health sector of the state put in place free health services to people in its mandate. These community intervention health programmes are designed with a view to restoring and rehabilitating the health status of people in order to be socio-economically productive for the betterment of the oil producing areas of the state.
The following are the programmes of the department in respect of the Health enhancement scheme of the Commission
-Screening and Treatment of Eye related Diseases, Donation of Eye Glasses and Eye Surgery;
-Mass Surgery in serious and common ailments
(iii) Coordinating the Procurement and Donation of Drugs and Medical Equipment to health Centers in the mandate areas;
Except for medical assistance provided to some medically challenged people, much was not achieved in the area of Health Intervention Programme from 2009 to date due to paucity of funds.
(B.) COMMUNITY RELATIONS AND MOBILIZATION/ADVOCACY
Stakeholders fora, Community Enlightenment and Advocacy, Communal Development Intervention, Peace Initiative and Emergency and Rapid Response Initiatives are programmes aimed at ensuring peace in the mandate area. Community participation and ownership of projects/programmes area also components of Community relations activities. It also liaise with Oil Associations, Oil Companies and other stakeholders to ensure a healthy communal-relation and hitch-free dealing in the interest of all parties.
